Puppy Schedule for Friday, June 29, 2012

I’ve not been doing anywhere near as good of a job with these as I would like!

Got the pup up, and outside this morning. Got her food out for her somewhere around 7:30-7:45 and she ate most of it on her own, with a little ‘help’ needed for the last of it to be interesting. No accidents yet so far today. Around 10:00 she started napping, so I put her into her crate instead of letting her snooze outside, so as to not need to keep as close of an eye on her. After a whimper and her going back to snoozing at 11-something, I opened the crate door. It’s noon, now, and she just woke up and crawled out, finally. She started sniffing about a little, so I took her outside and waited. Tidied up a little and missed her starting to urinate as she looked to be readying for a snooze just a moment earlier. Oh well. A less enthusiastic bit of praise for her, and a tiny treat. I came back from doing something real quick inside the house and found her defecating in the proper location! I gave her a big chunk of freeze-dried liver and a bunch of lively praise!

At 13:00 I put her back in the crate so that I could concentrate on a work conversation without her getting into something. She’s recently decided the laptop power cables are very interesting, which is very bad for her. Best case there is four amps and seventeen volts of DC power, so until I know she is safe, monitoring or out of harms way!

At a little before 14:00, she is still whining occasionally and is not happy about being in the crate while being awake and probably wanting to play. I have to wait for her to be quiet for a bit, as I can’t take the chance of rewarding her whimpering by letting her out. I did manage to get her out during a quiet bit, and after nosing around, mouthing at toys, flopping on her pillow, nosing around more, then finally whimpering at the back door I let her out thinking she needed to use the grass. Nope… She’s lying down, or nosing about on the patio area.

Jump ahead to 18:20 and pup isn’t interested much in play, after playing for a little, and seems restless. Is she hungry? She had a half cup of food for breakfast, and a quarter cup around noon… Well, let’s try! I put the remaining quarter cup of food into the bowl, then added a quarter cup of each, so there is three quarters of a cup of 50:50 mix of food in her bowl and she immediately started eating, once I allowed her to go to the bowl. After a while her interest tapered off, and the last third or so I had to turn it into a bit of a game. The handful left over I stuffed into the grippy recesses of one of her Kong toys; she didn’t want to wait for me to finish before giving it to her! I had to get her down off my knee a few times. When I finally gave it to her she did a wonderful job stripping the last of the food off of it and munching it down. That kept her busy until about 18:50.

Puppy Schedule for June 28, 2012

Last night we moved Vala’s crate back into our room, in the hopes that the all-night whimper session was a one-off. Too soon to say, but I slept great last night, and Vala was quiet.

07:00 Puppy up and out; slow wake up process.
07:10 Nearly had an accident in the hallway but I managed to get her to stop. Outside to use the grass, and a success. No urine in the hall!
07:19 Outside again, this time for defecation.
07:30 Back from visiting Sunhee, still not-awake. Food down, and she is eating almost immediately. Sort of. Distraction comes readily for her! After she ate a bit and started to ignore it more, I grabbed the food bowl and did some work with her. Mostly I was tossing a single bit of kibble a short distance somewhere in her line of sight, so she’d have to move a bit to get it; she likes this game! I did some hand feeding, with ‘take it’ when she’d take the bit of food. She has ‘look at me’ figured out and does a pretty good job of it when I threw it into the mix. Finished the entire half cup of food!
08:00 Into the kitchen! I need breakfast, too, and Vala followed. While getting the oatmeal ready, I checked on the frozen kong from yesterday. Offering it to her, she readily licked at the ice core. I’d say this is a winner, so I grabbed another one and put a peanut butter plug in the narrow end and offered her the spoon to clean off after, of course! She does like the peanut butter! After that, I had fun sprinkling a little water on her, but she started getting barky. This is not behavior I want to encourage, so that was the end of that.
08:10 Outside to urinate
08:20 Outside to defecate
09:00 She’s ready for a nap, settling down and snoozing on her own.
10:20 Attempt to empty puppy before heading to work. No luck emptying her…

10:30-13:30 Probably napping; I was at work, she was in her crate…

13:30 Out of the crate, a liiiiitle bit of cuddling, till she was a squirmy puppy. Out to the patio where… she peed on the patio. Oh well, at least it is outside. Now she is going to take a nap on the patio of her own accord.
14:00 She let me make and finish my lunch, and setting up ice cube trays to make ice cubes, but now she is a feisty puppy in need of play time! … and she is getting barky. :/ After some play, she settled down for a nap on the patio thing.

16:15 AUGH! While putting something away in the kitchen, and with the pup was only out of view for a moment. In that time, she urinated in the hallway. While cleaning that up, I caught up to her in time to see her half-done defecating behind the dining table…

When getting the food ready this time I scooped the quarter cup of adult food in the kitchen into the bowl, then out to her puppy chow container in the hallway where I retrieved a quarter cup of it. The whirr of the lid, with the rattle of the kibble frightens her a little. She scampered back a few feet, but quickly went around my leg and came closer to investigate.

Puppy Schedule for June 27, 2012

Ugh. Last night was long! I finally gave up at 01:30, after attempting everyone going to bed at 22:30, and moved the very noisy, whiny puppy and her crate out of the bedroom and to the living room.

06:10 Wake up and get her out. Cuddles!
06:50 Outside to empty the pup’s bladder.
07:00 Water tomato and pup while waiting for defecation. Vala goes nuts!
07:10 ‘Look at me’ for food. After three or four attempts she hops into my lap. More cuddling!
07:15 Outside again to try for defecation
07:20 No luck, so food in bowl and down … ignored, after a few bites. She settles down on her pillow after a bit of whimpering.
07:50 I get up to make myself breakfast, she decides nap time is over.
08:10 Say good bye to Sunhee, she whimpers and runs about, trying to find her! She starts doing the defecation spot hunt, so outside for that. YES! A success! Thank goodness! Praise and a freeze-dried liver bit. Food goes up, as she is mostly ignoring it or playing with it. Rescue my shoes from her and redirect her to the stuffed moose. A few times.
10:00 After a nice long run of napping, outside to use the grass. After I placed her on the pup-toilet, she used it fairly promptly and defecated. Praise, then back inside.
10:15 More napping on her own, out of the crate.
11:30 Put napping pup in the crate; she woke up, of course, and proceeded to whine while I showered and got ready to go to the apartment office, quieting down by the time I finished.
12:00 Pup out of the crate, a little cuddling and a little chew toy play, then she went back to napping.
13:10 Back in the crate, still napping.
14:45 Out of the crate, still snoozing. Making up for keeping us awake last night?
16:00 Out of the crate again. Don’t remember when I put her in. Trying to wake her up to eat! Added half a cup of 50/50 food mix to the previous quarter cup. She is eating, but it sort of depends on me tossing it on the ground in front of her, and she’ll pounce it and eat it. Managed to also get a successful instance of urination outside, and an instance of defecation outside!
16:34 She went back into her crate, chewing on the bedding a bit. I’m guessing a very bored puppy. Playing with the pup, as I don’t need another night without sleep!
17:00 Food abandoned, and she has decided that if I don’t play with her, she will sleep.
17:20 Took Vala for a walk—well, more for a carry—around the apartment complex. She squirmed a fair bit, and I’m not sure if she wanted down to explore or to run away.
17:45 Returned from the meander about the complex and let Vala out on the deck to see if she needed to use the grass. No go, so back inside. She flopped down rather quickly.
18:40 She’s awake! She’s playing! Gently, but doing something.

Hrm. Lost track of time, again!

At somewhere around 8 at night, I think, I got out Vala’s food and had her work for it a little bit, and made it a bit of a game in some cases so she could pounce the food. Worked a little bit on ‘look at me’ and said ‘take it’ for the times I didn’t have her do that trick, and had her take the food from my hand.

I had also decided to try a bit of an experiment. More on that later; the interesting result available now is that Vala loves ice! She went absolutely nuts after chasing the ice around in her metal bowl. She did a few laps around the kitchen divider. She ran down the hallway. She ran up the hallway. She ran around her crate. She ran from the kitchen to the sliding glass door. She ran from the sliding glass door to the kitchen.

She is now quite tired out! This is wonderful! It is only 21:20 so I’m not sure how this is going to work, but if she stays exhausted Sunhee and I should sleep great tonight.

Puppy Schedule for June 26, 2012

06:30 Out of crate, urinated outside, after a very short play session napping next to me.
07:00 Sunhee’s alarm goes off, pup gets up and after a few minutes starts playing with her toys.
07:20 We go visit Sunhee as her alarm has been going off constantly. Vala gets very excited to be put on the bed to see her! More bite inhibition work, with either of us whimpering or squealing or saying, ‘Ouch!’ when she bites.
07:35 After harassing Sunhee and ‘helping’ her wake up, outside for defecation. Come back to have Sunhee sprinkle water on the pup from the shower, resulting in Vala going nuts and sprinting around the house.
08:00 Vala finally settling back down; time for her breakfast! I made her work for the first part of it with “look at me” for each few bites. After a few repetitions, I let her free-feed from the remaining half a cup.
08:05 Outside to urinate after eating most of the food, back in for a celebration of using the toilet, then back to eating.
08:25 After finally finishing her food, she actually seems to be looking for more. I jam some freeze-dried liver into the small holes of two of her Kongs and put her in the create, so I can have breakfast and get a bit of uninterrupted work reading done.
09:15 Out comes the puppy! Mellow-ish playtime, with her doing a good job of entertaining herself with toys and only needing me to make them interesting occasionally.
09:38 Outside to urinate. Lots of praise, then inside to wipe her off with a paper towel. Gave her a freeze-dried liver treat which she did her celebratory play, tossing it about and pouncing on it a little before eating it.
10:15 Outside to urinate again, in prep to go to work.
10:25 While getting the rest of the things ready, after she went, she defecated under my desk. AUGH! Finished the rest of the prep, put on socks and shoes, and got everything ready before putting her in the crate, so as to not associate the defecation and the create.
14:45 Back from work, get Vala out of the crate. Some gentle cuddling and petting, water her, take her out—nothing. She acts like an empty puppy. So back in we go. Take my eyes off her for about half a second and as I look up, it’s too late. Puddle on the carpet! AUUGH! This recent regression from perfect toilet behavior to using the apartment is driving me nuts! Is it related to her thinking she is climbing the ranks? Trying to claim territory? It is certainly VERY FRUSTRATING! Clean up the mess, take her outside to see if she is hiding any other ‘surprises’ but get nothing.
15:10 Prep food for the fuzzy brat, and work on ‘look at me’ for a few cycles. She does quite well, considering I’m upping the difficult by wiggling my hands with the food in them instead of leaving them static. After a few rounds, one final ‘look at me’ and I give her the remaining half-cup of food in her bowl.
15:30 Take her out again to the patio and toilet set up. She sniffs about a bit, then lays down on the grass of the litter set up. I set about a bit of clean up, and after getting her to leave the broom alone she sets about trying to destroy the remnants of the sod roll used to make her litter area. After a while I give up waiting for her to go, and drag her from the sod roll and inside. I rig up her Kong chew toy with freeze-dried liver rammed into either end, make her sit and ‘look at me’ before I give it to her. At least this will keep her busy for a little bit…
14:00 Grr. Accident number three today! This is driving me nuts! Clean that up, close more doors in the apartment to reduce her accessible area even more. Barely catch her before she defecates, and has accident four! Outside, set her down, and after a bit of delay she finally hops up on the litter area and defecates. Lots of praise, hugging, petting, and inside to get a treat. That makes things a little better, at least.
16:15 Whiny little puppy; time for a nap, perhaps? She keeps playing, and flopping, so I think I’ll see if she’ll take a nap.
17:00 She definitely needed a nap! Got her out, and after failing to get her to eliminate, off to the vet! She did great at the vet, and we got home… I don’t remember when.

Missing details as arrival home, and another accident—I’ll be so glad when we’re back to perfect elimination behavior—I’ve lost track of timing.

20:00 Offered her another half-cup of the 50/50 food mix, and she has only eaten a few bites from it. Guess she’ll have that as breakfast tomorrow, instead, if she doesn’t get more interested in it.
20:18 Oh! Finally interested in food, right before I was going to take it away.
20:30 After some grumpy puppy behavior, she is settling down for a nap on her own, which is good. So long as she takes a nap on her own, I won’t need to crate her.

Nap Time for Puppies

After reading a number of message threads on Go Corgi, I suspect that Vala starts getting particularly troublesome to deal with as she is behaving just like a very young child. She is tired, but doesn’t want to go to sleep as there is so much new stuff in the world for her to explore, chew, bark at, eat, roll in, tear up, or otherwise interact with, she fights to stay awake and gets cranky.

Along with trying to keep track of her schedule today, I’m going to try putting her in the crate more, encouraging her to take more naps.
